Mr Mr Boss Boss & the potato blossom

After decades of producing music and theatre all over the world, Suncheol Lee came to Pyonchang for some personal time in 2002. He rented an old primary school, spent two years walking around the mountains, lost 30 kilos, became a vegetarian and started construction on the “Potato Blossom”, a multi-studio for art & nature that opened in 2005.

Looking for a retreat and a place to rent, he happened upon an abandoned school building. ‘I came for the nature and to be by myself’. Now, 14 years later his solitude has turned into an empire of film festivals, concerts, conferences, weddings, library, workshops, exhibitions, ukulele classes for the local grannies and the annual regulars: the spring picnic, summer school, autumn walking tours and the Christmas play where everyone in the village has to play a part. Did we mention the center is open 24/7 and there are no locks in the doors.

Trying to decide on a shoot location for this whopper of a man, we asked if there was a place he had a special connection with. Since we couldn’t get to ‘Lake Baikal’ right this moment, we headed for his second favorite place in the world, a little hill top above the 700 village where he often walks to alone or together with his entourage of visitors.

Today he expanded his empire and is stepping in for our hosts to run the 700 village so that the whole team (minus Mr Mr Boss Boss) can go to the beach! Applause!

Mr Mr Boss Boss’s life experience equals that of many 98-year olds, hence the recruitment into the Eyes as Big as Plates project. Suncheol Lee’s passion for his surroundings and vision that ‘the countryside needs people who like to play and not study’ promotes the message that countryside can be a rather alternative center for education. © Karoline Hjorth & Riitta Ikonen
