Wasps were introduced to the Faroe Islands in 1992. A nest arrived along with the new football stadium’s turf rolls. One of these newcomers changed our shoot plans for today when it accidentally bumped with our model. Luckily it so happened that the swimming pool came to our rescue once more. The reception desk telephones and telephone catalogues were on fire, until one of the life guards- Janus T Olsen called his father and we had a winner!
Niels is a musician and a retired primary school teacher from Vestmanna (he must have been a very inspiring one as two of his kids are now teachers too). He plays the keyboard, harmonica, accordion and also teaches music. His latest gig finished last night at 5am but we saw no sign of those wee hours in today’s performance.
When he is not playing with his band Vestmenn, Niels often comes to Gomlu Hoyvik for cod fishing. What a sunny Sunday we ended up spending here, on our last day on these fantastic islands!
Dear Norma, We are so sorry to reply to this lovely message so late – Riitta and I are not so often checking our comments here on the blog – but as we have our Kickstarter campaign up and running, we are finding all of these wonderful messages. And we would also like to thank you ever so much for your support! We greatly appreciate it and you are helping us get one step closer to getting that book out to the bookshelves. Hats off to you! Warmest regards from Riitta in New York and Karoline in Oslo. (ps: We would love to have an exhibition in the US, if this campaign is successful and the book will be made, we are planning to have a big launch in New York and Oslo – that would be a great opportunity to have an exhibition too, don’t you think?)
Ahhh, yes, please do exhibit in the USA. St. Petersburg, Florida, would be nice, in my opinion, as it is part of a larger city, (Tampa), with many art followers and museums, and…selfishly…it is near enough for me to attend.
Hi Karen, thank you for your lovely message! We would love to exhibit in Florida and St. Petersburg – any time!
We are trying to do a book of the series these days and have just launched a Kickstarter campaign where we are trying to raise funds to print an international book publication of the complete works to date. We would love your support, either with a little pledge or by helping us spread the word!
Thank you! I have shared your message and your link on my Facebook page, and will make my donation at week’s end (payday!). 🙂 Best of luck to you both.
How amazing to hear! We are so happy to hear you like it and we hope the great model does too 🙂 Send him all our best wishes! By the way, by the end of this year his image will also be part of the very first Eyes as Big as Plates book – we are so excited and we can’t wait! We hope we get the chance to come back to our favourite islands again soon, take a deep breath of that fantastic sea breeze air for us please.
Happy Women’s Day and the Warmest wishes from Oslo and New York,
Karoline and Riitta.
Looks like reindeer lichen (cladonia rangiferina) to me.
