Oslo Negativ Photo Festival 12-27 October

Vuonislahti village chief Anu lives at the foot of Europes longest inland ice road, connecting the small communities overlooking lake Pielinen and the Koli National Park in Eastern Finland.

The Koli Ice Road is only open if conditions allow, once the ice is strong enough to support the weight of vehicles, which requires a layer of steel ice as thick as 40 centimeters. Increasing periods of warmer weather has made the ice road season less predictable, with later start and earlier end days.

Anu’s portrait was created on the celebratory opening day of the 2023 season, in collaboration with the dream team that runs the UNESCO North Korelia Biosphere Reserve.

When Oslo Negativ photo festival opens in the capital’s old Veterinary School this Saturday, Anu will be exhibited in great company with the Bjørka artist collective’s 36 members. The group show is curated by Monica Holmen and is open every weekend until October 27th.
